Pontian Municipal Council was established on November 1, 1976 under Act 124 (Temporary Act) which was later declared as Act 171, Local Government Act 1976. The administration of this Council covers an area of ​​1080 hectares covering Pontian Town, Pekan Nanas, Benut, Permas and Ayer Baloi. Prior to the establishment of the Pontian Municipal Council, Pontian Town was administered by the Pontian Town Council, while the Pekan Nanas, Benut, Ayer Baloi and Permas Branches were administered by their respective Local Councils.
